The concept of ‘Sustainable Livelihoods’ constitute the basis of different ‘Sustainable Livelihood Approaches’ that has been adapted by ARDI.
According to British Department for International Development “A livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets and activities required for a means of living. A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both now and in the future, while not undermining the natural resource base.” ARDI’s biggest aspiration is to contribute to the reduction of poverty among vulnerable populations in Uganda. Though the application of the livelihoods approach is flexible and adaptable to specific local settings; objectives defined in participatory manner with the communities, underlies a couple of core principles.
Livelihood Strategies

ARDI’s Livelihood strategies comprise a range of activities and choices that communities under take in order to achieve their livelihood goals. We believe in a dynamic process in which people combine activities to meet their various needs at different times. The strategies are direct dependent on asset status, local policies, community institutions and processes involved to strengthen communities to have sustainable livelihoods.
